A-Level Chemistry: mastering organic mechanisms

Mechanisms are not memorisation — they are a small set of rules applied again and again.

Students lose marks in organic chemistry because they memorise mechanisms as pictures rather than understanding the logic.

Every mechanism follows the same question: where are the electrons, and where do they want to go?

Once you can identify nucleophiles, electrophiles and leaving groups, nucleophilic substitution, elimination and addition all collapse into one framework. Practise drawing curly arrows from the electron source, never from the positive charge.
